Exploring the world of mythology

I've always wondered what the big deal was about mythology. It is unique in it's own form, however most most debate that it's mainly all that it is "myth". As a modern day woman and a writer,I am always looking for daily inspiration,or something to trigger my inspire gene. Honestly it wasn't really until playing a video game called "Valkyrie Profile" that I even took the slightest interest in an form of mythology. Based on Norse mythology,it incorporated the Pagan god Odin, with his battle maidens called "Valkyries" as the main characters. Odin was often the antagonist,as in the actual folklore,he was depicted as a vengeful and selfish god who was once a man. The more I learned about the actual myths(as opposed to what looked good in a video game) it really got me thinking. What am I not exposing myself to but not at least first researching different folklore of many countries, places of origin and times. What am I truly missing out on,as a writer, mythology is often many subjects to adapt and take from to inspire a story you may have as something new and fresh. And let's be honest people....THERE ARE HUNDREDS of ethnicity's, races, countries, languages and places myth is derived from. Folklore on women, folklore on people of color, folklore on homosexuality, things our world has forgotten that through each day I would like to commit myself to finding and researching everyday if you will join my journey. :)
